How we became intimately familiar with the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center

In January 2020, just 5 days after the Grand Opening of Wister’s, I was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2), a rare disorder in which tumors grow on my brain and spine. There is currently no cure for NF2. Just one month after opening Wister’s, I went to Duke’s Brain Tumor Center for my first brain surgery to remove one of my 14 brain tumors. Shortly after recovering, I endured 6 weeks of daily radiation treatment. Since 2020, I have undergone a second brain surgery, a spinal surgery, am currently in the middle of a 5 month immunotherapy treatment, and will potentially join a clinical trial in 2025. Because of my tumors I deal with hearing and visual issues, balance problems, facial numbness, extreme fatigue, and headaches.

I am such a believer in the Brain Tumor Center at Duke that I took on the role as the Event Planner for the Brain Tumor Center’s annual fundraiser, Angels Among Us 5K and Walk for Hope. All donations made here and through Angels Among Us go directly to research and clinical trials at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center. While my diagnosis has been an incredibly difficult challenge that I’ll live with for the rest of my life, I am grateful for the opportunity to play an active role in raising funds that could potentially find a cure for all sorts of brain tumors.

Every dollar raised helps us find a cure. I am so grateful for your support and donations on this journey.

With thanks,
